Climate change already affects agriculture and food security, and if no urgent actions are taken, will put millions of people at risk of hunger and poverty.

Agricultural production system

Agriculture Nature-based Solutions (Ag NbS) have high potential to help mitigate the negative effects of climate change and protect biodiversity in working landscapes around the world. However, relative to its potential, Ag NbS has not scaled-up. One barrier to scaling is that Ag NbS tend to be capital intensive, requiring significant amounts of public funding or private investment, or a blend of grants and investment capital.

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are cost-effective interventions that can enhance resilience in agriculture and food production, while mitigating climate change and enhancing the environment.

In agricultural landscapes, NbS can be applied for soil health, soil moisture, carbon mitigation (through soil and forestry), downstream water quality protections, biodiversity benefits as well as agricultural production and supply chains to achieve net-zero environmental impacts while achieving food and water security and meet climate goals.

Climate change

Implementing Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices requires changes in the behavior and strategy of millions of farmers. Rural Advisory Services (RAS) can play a crucial role in transitioning to CSA and help build resilient agrifood systems if a conducive environment for their effective functioning is created.
