23rd Annual Workshop of the Horticultural Association of Kenya (HAK)
November 13, 2023 @ 8:00 am - November 17, 2023 @ 5:00 pm UTC+3
Theme: More, Healthier and Safer Food
13th – 17th November 2023
hosted at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (www.icipe.org)
Thomas Odhiambo Campus, Mbita Point, on the shores of Lake Victoria, Kenya
The objective of HAK (http://www.hakenya.net) is to promote horticultural science in Kenya through the
generation, dissemination and exchange of horticultural information and technologies among members
and stakeholders. The Association has about 250 members drawn from universities, research organisations
and industry.
The HAK annual workshops bring together academics, researchers, practitioners, scholars and farmers, to
deliberate varied topics on sustainable horticultural production in Kenya, and more broadly in Africa and
the tropics. Young scholars and practitioners benefit from dedicated training, to strengthen their scientific
and technical skills. The workshops also recognise excellence in horticultural science through awards to
best presenters. We also conduct training for farmers on basic skills in pest identification and integrated
pest management.
The theme of 2023 HAK workshop is ‘More, healthier and safer food’, in appreciation of the rising
global need for food that is produced without adverse impact on natural resources, and is devoid of
contamination by pathogens or chemicals; as well as the access, intake and uptake of sufficient amounts
of nutritious food by all people.
The forum structure includes keynote addresses, plenary presentations, field excursions, students training
on writing skills, farmers training on safe use of pesticides, laboratory and on-station visits of icipe’s
research on one health, nature-based, inclusive innovations, and awards presentation.
